Closer Than Your Skin

by Susan D. Hill

A very intesting subject. I imagine many believers would like to have a more intimate relationship with God.

Susan Hill includes several very good stories that show types of intimacy with God. One problem with the book is that the stories feel very random, with little to connect them. In addition the overall book just did not hold my interest very well.

For Parents Only

by Shaunti Feldhahn and Lisa A. Rice

I read this book with a good bit of interest since Becky and I have a 12 year old daughter.

My first impression was that a lot of their ideas are based on the result of this national poll. While the poll results could be useful, the design of the questions in some cases seems to guarantee the result that verifies their theory.

Much more interesting to me were the cases where they reported conversations with the kids. In one case a group of kids admit that they evaded a police car while smoking pot. They then proceed to claim to be good kids. When confronted on this one of them says"But we are good kids. We're not on drugs or in jail.. and we're not, like, tattoo freaks or anything."

While the book has some good ideas, I really do not think things are as simple as portrayed. However I think the book does at least give some insight into how kids want to be seen.

Author Bio: Shaunti Feldhahn is the author of For Women Only and numerous other books, with sales totaling nearly one million copies. A nationally syndicated newspaper columnist and public speaker, Feldhahn earned her master’s degree at Harvard University. She and her husband, Jeff, have two young children. Lisa A. Rice is the associate editor of Christian Living magazine, the mother of two teenage girls, and a screenwriter and producer.

Mosaic

by Amy Grant

Ok, I'll begin with a disclaimer. I have been a fan of Amy Grant's music for over 25 years. I am predisposed to buy any music Amy puts out. However books are another matter.

My first look at Mosaic I was worried that the book would be very chaotic and disconnected. However the book reads very much like hearing Amy speak in person. Using song lyrics and poems to tie together separate stories from Amy's life and career.

Amy gives us what appears to be a very honest and straight forward look at her life with no evasion. However it is not a kiss and tell book. These stories and memories are about Amy and how she has dealt with the challenges of life. These give insights on motherhood, marriage, friendship, faith, loss, forgiveness, and redemption.

Overall this was a very pleasant book to read. I read quite a few books and some are fun to read, while some teach me something. Mosaic is one of the few books I have read that I honestly enjoyed and felt I had learned something about life and relationships while reading. I very much look forward to any future books Amy writes.
